Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is the second largest and most important city in Greece (after Athens), the capital of Central Macedonia with more than 3,000-year history located in the north of the country on the coast of the Aegean Sea.

The history of Thessaloniki begins in the 4th century BC. when King Cassander decided to found a city in honor of his wife – half-sister of Alexander the Great. But life and culture originated at this place much earlier as evidenced by numerous archaeological excavations during which were found traces of Neanderthals, considered the oldest on the entire European continent.

In the 90s. the 20th century, Thessaloniki was awarded the title of European cultural capital. Today the city is famous for its festivals and events – various exhibitions, theater performances, and concerts often take place here.
